Silverhill welcomes children of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). With the help of the SEN staff we aim to address their needs within the class. However, if more is required, there is provision for specialised support. As an inclusive school, we liaise with outside professionals.
We can offer support for children with dyslexia from qualified support staff. Mrs. Eva Stewart, who is currently on our staff, will begin a year’s training course in September for the formal assessment of dyslexia. While she is completing this training, we will bring in the necessary expertise when a child needs a formal assessment.
We also have a programme encouraging the use of multi-sensory techniques, IDL (indirect learning), which is used with a small number of children. It is a programme which concentrates on reading and spelling. This is run by Mrs Milsom.
We are delighted to welcome to our staff, on a consultative basis, Julia Seaton, a qualified primary school teacher and Educational Therapist (UKCP), who will provide inset training for our staff to assist them in the ever-increasing demands within the pastoral area. She can also be available for individual assessment and therapeutic input for children or groups where emotional factors are inhibiting their learning. This would be done through close consultation with both parents and staff.
