Speech & Drama (LAMDA)
In Key Stage 2 students have the opportunity to participate in weekly Speech and Drama lessons. Working in groups of 2 – 4, children build confidence and hone communication skills through warm-up exercises, learning and delivering poetry and book extracts and a variety of improvisation tasks. Each year the children enter an accredited London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) examination; local festivals and school concerts provide additional opportunities for students to gain performance experience. Speech and Drama lessons give children a practical means of exploring literature, using their imaginations – and have a great deal of fun!
“I have been going to Speech and Drama lessons since Year 3 and have loved every minute of it! It has helped me build my confidence and made me ready to perform. It’s not only about learning and loving poetry but also about expressing yourself in a fun environment. I am so pleased I have had this experience. ” – Year 6 pupil.
We have a love of music at Silverhill and with the help of our specialist teachers, our pupils receive an exciting and practical musical education from pre-school through to Year 6.
Performing is at the heart of our Music curriculum; our pupils are encouraged to join our choirs and to play a variety of instruments. All children will enjoy whole class recorder tuition in Years 2, 3 and 4 which gives them a solid musical foundation on which to build. This has proven to be effective, as a significant percentage of our students choose to receive individual tuition. We currently offer individual and group tuition on the following instruments:
We love to celebrate the achievements of our musicians and all pupils are encouraged to perform in our termly concerts.
All pupils are warmly welcomed to join our choirs – ‘Little Choir’ for children in Years 1, 2 and 3 and ‘Big Choir’ for Years 4, 5 and 6. The choirs perform many times during the school year and we are very proud of the high performance standard they reach.
Children love Silverhill Dance Club where they build confidence, knowledge and enjoyment of dance. The classes aim to expand the children’s knowledge of dance vocabulary and lets them experiment with many different styles of modern dance such as street dance, hip hop, jazz and contemporary.
There are two clubs currently running at the school for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children.
Along with showing their routines at school assemblies, children also have the opportunity of performing in public at both the school’s Christmas and Summer Fayre.
The classes are run by Emma Offer who is a fully qualified and experienced ISTD teacher.
